Mobile Developer Community
MobileDeveloper.org is an open source mobile platforms, tools, and industry alliances evaluation community. The community is started by a group of graduate students at Carnegie Mellon University's West-coast campus, as an Open Source Software '08 class project (under CMU-West's ongoing research within its Center for Open Source Investigation (COSI)). MobileAdvisor.org project objective is to:
- provide a public community web site for evaluating open source mobile platforms and tools
- build a community of interest around open source mobile development
- invite and enable the mobile developers to co-create and share information on open source mobile development
- cross-pollinate ideas by linking with other communities of mutual interest
At initial launch, the following open source mobile platforms, tools, and alliances have been evaluated, to help the mobile application developer, in deciding which platform and tools to develop on:
- Open-source platforms: OpenMoko, LiMo, Maemo and Android
- Contrasted with proprietary platforms: Symbian - soon to be open source, Windows Mobile, Blackberry OS and iPhone OS
- Open source, Ajax-based Web 2.0 GUI toolkits (with focus on mobile support): Dojo (commercially WaveMaker), Google Web Toolkit, Yahoo! User Interface Library, OpenLaszlo, Tibco General Interface
- Overview of the mobile alliances: LiMo Foundation, LiPS Forum, Open Handset Alliance, Open Mobile Alliance, and Symbian Foundation
